It’s comical when I hear people talk about their God given rights. Whether it’s free speech or guns they always talk about how God has blessed them with these rights and no one can trample or take them away. Too bad they neglect the fact that God never gave them those right, but men did. Small fact that always seem to get overlooked.
I find it funny how other countries and civilizations have been around hundreds even thousands of years before America was even a thought, but we were the only ones blessed with God given rights. Seems easy to believe right? God just waited for 1776 to give us free speech and guns; we were the lucky ones. Thousands of years and we were the lottery winners in God’s lottery.
God didn’t give you the rights to free speech or own a gun, that was a bunch of men who did that. You can point to the Declaration of Independence and bemoan that it says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” I don’t see the God given rights section any where in the Declaration of Independence or Constitution. No where does it say God said, “America, you deserve to be the only country in existence in the past 2 thousand or so years to have my rights to free speech or guns.” Of course it says Creator, not God. And their Creator not your God.
And don’t think I have an issue with God or anything. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith—as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos. It will be a home run. And so that will make it a 4–0 ballgame.
We need to wrap our heads that our unalienable rights are not God given. If men gave you the right to bear arms they can also take that right away from you. This nonsense that something written in back in the 1776 can still apply to who we are as a country today. We’ve evolved, albeit we’ve been regressing a lot lately, but shouldn’t the Constitution evolve as well. I’m sure that is a conversation for another blog post, but it’s food for thought.
Before you start writing on poster boards for a protest that God gave you this or that, just know God didn’t give you or this country anything. Christian America has this perverted belief that America was created for them and by them. They’re so quick to rewrite history to make it like America was founded on all these Christian beliefs, but it wasn’t. It’s tiring hearing the Christian right always act they’re the ones being persecuted or God gave them America etc.
Repeat after me, there is no such thing as God given rights. Your free speech, you guns, your liberty etc. were never given to you by God. The sooner you realize that the sooner we can evolve as a country from the disease riddled ideology of religion.
